Patriots to take stand against domestic violence

A few National Football League players have wound up as headline news over the last year for reasons that have nothing to do with their prowess on the field. Domestic violence and sexual assault allegations have marred the careers of several NFL players and the league itself.

However, it appears that at least one ball club is attempting to fix the problem, which reaches far beyond the ranks of the NFL. Recently, the Attorney General of Massachusetts announced that her office will partner with the New England Patriots to address this problem.

The Patriots Charitable Foundation is reaching out to coaches, faculty and students at Massachusetts high schools with a new program. Known as Game Change: The Patriots Anti-Violence Partnership, the initial effort targets 90 high schools across the state. Using Northeastern University's Mentors in Violence Prevention program as a training module, the Massachusetts Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence and Jane Doe Inc., will provide support to program participants.

The Patriots owner, his family and the foundation are donating $1.5 million to the new program. They also made other donations to sexual assault and domestic violence groups around the state.

Statistics show that a third of young people are exposed to verbal, emotional, sexual or physical abuse in their relationships. Peers can share their experiences and coping strategies with one another in order to prevent future occurrences.

Taking a stand against domestic violence is very important. Those in relationships where this is already an issue may need help escaping the nightmare of escalating abuse. A family law attorney can guide abused spouses through the process of getting protective orders in place before filing for divorce.
